One of the largest privately-owned water works systems in the country is that of the Hackensack Water Company, the main office of which is located at Weehawken, N. J. Two pumping stations, one located at New Milford, Bergen County, and the other at New Durham, Hudson County, furnish the supply for the forty-nine municipalities on the system. The territory supplied by the Hackensack Water Company is located ed on the west side of the Hudson River, directly opposite New York City, and is bounded on the north by the New Jersey and New York State line; on the south by the north line of Jersey City; on the east by the Hudson River and on the west by the Passaic river. Water is taken from the Hackensack River and an impounding reservoir, from which it is pumped into three distributing reservoirs, having a total capacity of 102,500,000 gallons, and one standpipe. The average daily consumption is 29,000,000 gallons and the pressure for domestic and fire purposes ranges from 20 to 125 pounds. More than 500 miles of cast iron pipe, in sizes from 4 to 54 inches, carries the water to the various places, and distributed throughout these places are close to 3,000 fire hydrants, all of Corey, Ludlow.
