THE BOMBAY, INDIA, PIPELINE

Some Notes on the Construction of an Interesting Piece of Work—Transportation and Field Work Example of Organization

THE city of Bombay, India, which at present requires 90 million gallons of water per day and will, it is estimated, require in the future 160 million gallons depends for its water upon lake Tansa some 55 miles distant. The recently completed line which comprises no less than 110 miles of steel pipe is now all but complete and the work has been carried out under rather novel conditions by an Indian concern the Tata Company. The steel was obtained in Britain mainly in the form of plates amounting to some 90,000 tons from a well known steel works who handed them over to another concern in Britain for fabrication. While specials in the shape of bends, expansion pieces, etc., were made up in England a local factory was set up in India for the purpose of fabricating the pipes.
