The threestory brick oil mill, the office building and another shed were saved together with 500 bales of cotton stacked up against one of the burned buildings. Chief Neuenschwander comments as follows: “The lesson taught by this fire is that nothing but concrete structures should be used for storage of cottonseed, the roof of concrete or steel, with plenty of vent when the blow comes. The blow comes after spontaneous combustion and a slow charring process eats a cavity in the pile, which finally caves in. Then the gases form, ignite and an explosion takes place and then it ‘happens’ and it is the same old story. You never know when a cotton fire is out.” The department was badly hampered by the hydrants being all on one street, which necessitated dragging the lines to the next street. The lines ranged from 750 to 1,500 feet in length. The water supply, too, was insufficient for the tremendous demand upon it. Seventy firemen were engaged and employed six Ahrens steamers, two Ahrens-Fox pumpers, one Seagrave aerial truck, two American-LaFrance service trucks and three fuel wagons. Fifteen engine streams were thrown at one time and 5,800 feet of hose were laid, of which two lengths were burned beyond repair. The total loss approximated $500,000.
