The Steam Engine in Use in the London Fire Brigade.

It .eems singular, therefore, that a great city like London, with an area j i nearly 700 square miles to protect, including her suburbs, should earners can be brought into action fully as quick, and do so much re effective service. Captain Shaw, Chief of the London Brigade, in a recent interview, claimed that the buildings of London were quite as inflammable and dangerous as those of New York. The reverse of this has always been asserted heretofore, and the inflammable architecture of American cities has been held responsible for the numerous disastrous fires with which they are visited. But if the facts regarding the buildings in London bear out Captain Shaw's statement, an additional reason is furnished for surprise at the persistency with which he adheres to his Manual Engines. The cut which we present shows the construction of the London Steamers to be very different from Ameriican Steamers, and more cumbersome. It will be observed, also, that the hose is carried on the Engine. This is light unlincd linen hose mainly, though some leather hose is used. The Engine has no Tender or Hose Carriage to accompany it. We understand that Capt. Shaw is now testing some of our American hose with a view to substituting it for the linen hose in use, and also contemplates introducingTenders to the Engines. Shand & Mason of London are the most popular Engine builders in Europe, and they may be found in nearly every city where Steamers are used. There are, however, a few Engines of American make in European cities, and, wherever they have been used, they are highly approved. Specimens of the Shand & Mason Engines arc on exhibition at the Paris Exposition, where they will be compared with at least two styles of American Steamers—the Silsby and the La France. One of the latter was shipped to the Exposition last week, and, we have been informed, a Silsby is already there. Both these are of the rotary style, while the Shand & Mason is a piston. Engine. Quite a number of the latter are in use in Canada, a fine one having just been received by the Grand Trunk Railroad for use at one of their stations. Mr. Merrywcather, representing Shand was in this city some years ago when Commissioner Pcrley, then Chief Engineer, exhibited to him some of the Steamers then in use. He expressed his amazement at the celerity with which they could be brought into action, and, undoubtedly, obtained some valuable ideas for subsequent use.
