The preceding series of articles gave a fair outline of the spontaneous combustion of coal. We have seen how, in the majority of cases, with the proper amount of care, such fires may be prevented. Automatic means to notify millowners, and the officers of vessels carrying coal, of a spontaneous heating of the cargo, or the store on hand, is of prime importance.
