SKIDDING OF FIRE APPARATUS.
The occasion has presented itself, in the form of accidents, that the danger of skidding should be provided against on all motor fire apparatus. The uncertainty exists of had weather in consequence of which streets are in no condition for absolute control of motor fire apparatus unless the wheels are properly protected by non-skidding tires or devices. In another part of this paper appears an item of a tractor drawn engine skidding on a steep grade in bad weather in Trenton, N. J., two people being killed and four injured, while another item tells of the death of a fireman and the injury of the chief engineer and a fireman in Leonia, N. J., through the skidding of fire apparatus. Nonskidding tires and devices are in successful and extensive use so that means for the prevention of the danger of apparatus skidding is available and all motor apparatus should be so equipped as to preclude skidding. In this way accidents may be avoided and the efficiency of a fire department increased in consequence.
