Rhode Island Relief Fund

The commissioners of the Rhode Island State Firemen’s Relief Fund at their meeting last week ordered the distribution of $357.50. Of this amount $205.50 was for the relief of injured firemen and the balance, $125, for the assistance of five widows and 13 minor orphan children of firemen killed in the discharge of their duty. Cases of seven injured firemen were considered on claims for 398 days' disability. One of these for 156 days was continued for further investigation, while payment for 174 days was allowed the other six claimants. The demands upon this fund, for which the State makes an annual appropriation of $2,500, all unexpended balances of which revert to the general treasury of the State, is constantly increasing. It has been evident for some time that a number of changes should be made at an early date in the law governing the distribution of this fund, in order that the intent of the originators of the law may be carried out to its fullest scope, and thereby give to the firemen throughout Rhode Island the utmost benefit possible.
