Response Data Is in the Cards Kept on Apparatus

New developments, more houses and changed water sources are some of the problems facing volunteer fire departments in rapidly expanding suburban areas such as Upper Saddle River, N.J. These changes are difficult for the average volunteer to keep track of and the addition of many apparatus drivers with differing knowledge of the borough geography further complicates providing adequate fire protection.

The existence of these developments in Upper Saddle River was brought home by the realization that dead-end streets had been extended to become through streets, and 10 new streets were added this year. These changes made the map and guide in the firehouse obsolete. The culmination came at a structure fire on a new street without a name.
