Researchers Seek Safer Home Environment

A group of researchers at Case Western Reserve University is trying to put a cushion of safety into every cushion we sit on.

The subjects of their study are the highly flammable foamed plastic products used in building insulation, bedding and furniture cushions. The materials used in some of these products—polyurethane and polystyrene—are so flammable they have been used as solid propellant rocket fuels, according to Associate Professor James S. T’ien of the department of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
