A committee ot citizens, not identified with the fire department, but of the opinion that the firemen have not been fairly dealt with, has taken the initiative in the matter. A public mass-meeting will be held to voice formal protest. The City Council has created opposition to the proposed change by its action in particularly ignoring the firemen in their plans for a paid department. The firemen have not been opposed to a paid department if it can be established in what they consider the right way, and if the members of the paid department are selected from the volunteer force, as were the original members of the paid departments ot Philadelphia, New York, Brooklyn and other cities. The volunteer firemen and the volunteer department of Reading have many friends in that city who do not like the way the volunteers have been treated in creating the paid force. The petition for the referendum, must be signed at the city hall and completed within ten days of the final passage of the new ordinance, which will be about April 10. It must contain 3,200 signatures, and there are 5,000 volunteer firemen and several times that of former volunteer firemen in the city who. it is claimed, are now opposed to the proposed paid department. One large organization outside of the fire department has adopted a resolution opposing the proposed change, and openly allege that behind the action of the Council was a desire to create jobs, so that campaign contributions could be levied.
