Pittsburgh Fire Department.
At the monthly meeting of the Pittsburgh Fire Commissioners, held January 9th, Chief Engineer Evans made the following report for December: There were 13 fires and alarms with a total loss of $1,300. No fire amounted to over $300 loss. He continues, “ I beg leave to again call your attention to the fact that we are badly in need of additional hose. We hvea no extra hose at all, as I have heretofore reported to you, and at every fire now, the old gum hose so long in use, is giving way, so that our stock in actual use is rapidly diminishing.
After a recent fire near the depot, within a few days, I was compelled to send to the East Liberty Company for hose to fill up the complement of Engine Company No. 3. Should any emergency arise, there might be great loss for want of a sufficient supply of reliable hose. When our stock is replenished, I can send some of the old hose to the incline planes and other places where calls have been made for such protection, and where they will not be subjected to the pressure of a fire engine, This hose would last a considerable time yet for plug use.”
