Paid Department in West New York
The West New York, N. J., Council has appointed a paid fire department of twenty six men with Ernest G. Becker as chief engineer, the appointments to take effect May 15. The department will be divided into five companies and besides the chief the force consists of five captains, a fire alarm electrician and nineteen firemen. All but one of the captains were chosen from the list of paid firemen under the volunteer deparment. The salary of the chief is $1,200 a year, captains and fire alarm electrician $1,000 each and the firemen $900 each.
