氧气用于火灾。

在最新的消防部门氧气设备ent is now regarded as being an essential feature, as it is the only successful method of treating the firemen asphyxiated with smoke or other poisonous fumes. One of the first cities in the Union to adopt the use of oxygen in the fire department was Philadelphia. In July, 1900, Dr. H. R. Owen, chief surgeon of the Bureau of Police and Fire, sent a circular to the hospitals of that city asking them to carry a tank of oxy gen in their ambulances to all fires. This they did, and the result was more than satisfactory. Recentb-. Dr. Owen said: “It was not until the small oxygen generators manufactured by the E. P. Off Dental Manufacturing Company were brought to my attention that 1 saw my way clear towards the installation of oxygen apparatus in the department, as the former types of tanks were too large and heavy. Some of those who attended the convention at Grand Rapids will no doubt recollect the Oxone Oxy gen Generator which was exhibited there, and which was received with such favorable comment. This apparatus is portable and weighs only four pounds. It will furnish instantly a supply of absolutely pure oxygen. The gas is freshly generated and is more active than that from tanks filled with compressed and impure oxygen. Oxone is a compact form of sodium peroxide which upon contact with water generates (litre oxygen gas exactly as calcium carbide gives acetylene gas. Oxygen in such a state of purity has heretofore not been obtainable, and in this form has no irritating effects whatever when inhaled, besides it is tasteless and odorless. The apparatus can be charged and will remain in a dormant condition for any length of time ready to start in an instant. Should a small part of the cartridge be used, say to-day, the remaining portion of the charge can be utilized at any future time, as it does not deteriorate. The use of oxygen is absolutely necessary in all cases of suffocation from smoke, illuminating and other poisonous gases, and of course the sooner it is administered to the stricken fireman the more chance he has of recovery. When used instantly in cases of suffocation from smoke, two or three minutes is usually sufficient to put the fireman on his feet. The Oxone Oxygen Generator in the fire department serves two purposes: First—As a resuscitating agent in cases of asphyxiation. shock from excessive injury. or exhaustion. Second— With the addition of the Oxone Mask ( weight 2 oz. ) covering the mouth and nose and attached to the oxone generator, which is slung over the shoulder of the fireman; he can enter a smokefilled cellar or other chamber in ease and with 'safety. Owing to its lightness it has many advantages over other apparatus for this purpose.
