The twenty-second annual report of the superintendent and cashier of the city of Norwich, Conn., water works shows that the net earnings of the department in the last year were $1,880.04. Permanent improvements decreased the revenue. During the year 13,336 feet of cement mains have been replaced with iron, and 8,052 feet of extensions or new mains have been laid. About 3,000 services are now in use, nearly one-third of which are iron, and are very badly corroded. The city has now 39 miles of water mains. The number of families supplied is 4,053, baths, 1,089; saloons,70; street and front sprinklers,390;garden hydrants, 358; jet and spray fountains, 21; public fire cisterns 20; watering troughs,6; fire hydrants,307; motors,25; elevators, 4; pressure pumps, 24. During the year $15 was received for flowing a cranberry patch. The general use of meters in the city is recommended by the superintendent, as it is estimated that the supply would thus be increased one-third.
