Newark Firemen Ask for Raise
A new salary schedule for firemen has been presented to the department of public safety at Newark by a committee made up of representatives from the fire department. Advances of from $100 to $300 a year are requested in the schedule. The increases proposed are as follows: first year men, from $1,800 to $1,900; second year men $1,900 to $2,000; third year, $1,900 to $2,100; fourth year, $2,000 to 2,300. The increase for superior officers is $300, the same as that for the fourth year men. The present salaries of the superior officers are as follows: fire captains, $2,600; battalion chiefs, $3,400; deputy chiefs, $4,400, and chiefs, $5,400. There are, at present, 735 men in the fire department receiving $2,000 a year or more, forty-six $1,900, thirty-one $1,800 and a number of linemen, telegraph operators and others connected with the fire department who will be affected by the proposed salary increase.
