New Water Plant for Warren
Warren, Ohio, is now assured of an ample supply of water, through the installation of a new water system by the Trumbull Public Service Company. A new pumping station has been erected at the corner of Mahoning avenue and Summit street. It is an attractive building of face brick and concrete. Two new electric pumps, with a daily capacity of 6,000,000 gallons pump the water from the river into the settling basins through 20-inch mains. The settling basins are 40 by 80 feet in size and 16 feet deep. There are two of these constructed of cement and occupying positions on the hill just cast of the old pump house. The alum is placed in the water while it is in the raw state before it enters the settling basins. One pound of powdered alum is used for every 7,000 gallons of water. The alum is placed in the water by special machinery assuring a uniform distribution. From the settling beds, where much of the heavy sediment is taken out of the water by gravity the water goes into the filtering beds where it passes through the sand filters. It takes four hours for the water to go through these. There are four large filter beds. Chlorine is used as an additional precaution. But little of this is used and it is placed in the water after it is filtered. The amount of chlorine used in a day is five pounds. The company has installed two new fire pumps which can give a fire pressure of 135 pounds.
