Multiple-Death Fires Down; Casualties Up

Multiple-death fires—those in which three or more persons were killed— claimed 1,325 lives in 272 fires or explosions in the United States and Canada in 1965, the National Fire Protection Association reported.

According to the NFPA report, this is a decrease of 11 in the number of multiple-death fires from the previous year. The number of persons killed rose by 101, however, from 1,224 in 1964 to 1,325. Nearly half of the victims— 658—were children. The record high in the number of lives claimed by these fires was set in 1963 when there were 1,658 such fatalities.
