MOTOR DRIVEN FIRE APPARATUS

MOTOR DRIVEN FIRE APPARATUS

Part 16.

There is no point in connection with motordriven fire apparatus that has caused more controversy than the type Of pump employed on the gasoline engine operated pumping machine. In presenting this discussion, the writer will present the arguments advanced for the various types by their adherents and wishes it distinctly understood that he holds no brief for any special form of water pump as the various types have so clearly demonstrated their practicability in actual service that mere theoretical considerations are of little more than academic interest. The pumps that liavp been used in this connection are of two general types, those in which water is circulated by rotating elements and the other form in which the water is pumped by reciprocating piston members. The first classification may be divided into two distinct types, the centrifugal impeller or turbine pump and the gear pump. It is with these forms that this exposition will deal, leaving the reciprocating form for consideration in another installment.
