Another fire with considerable damage visited St. Joseph, Mo., according to an account furnished by Chief Horace G. Regan of the fire department. This fire occurred outside the city limits in the lard refinery ,of Morris & Co., construction of brick and frame, five stories in height. The fire, which started on the fifth floor from unknown cause, was fought by three private fire departments, that of Swift & Co., five men, Hammond, five men and Morris & Co., five men. The latter also furnished forty helpers, which in addition to the city’s twenty-one firemen totalled seventy-six men engaged in fighting the blaze. The entire fifth floor was burning and flames were issuing through the roof and windows when Chief Regan arrived with his men in answer to a telephone alarm at 6:05 P. M. The city department was equipped with one Seagrave pumper, one White combination car and two chiefs’ cars. There were twelve 6-inch double hydrants available about 150 feet apart with a pressure of 45 pounds. Eight hydrant and two engine streams were thrown, besides two 2-way deluge sets being used. The nozzles were 1 1/8 inch, and 3,350 feet of hose were laid, one length of which burst during the fire. The hose consisted of 3,000 feet of cotton rubber-lined and 350 feet of rubber of 2 1/2 inch. The private departments were equipped with four handreels, hose and ladders. The fire was stopped at the third floor, it having burned three and a half hours.
