CHICAGO FIRES IN JANUARY.
The Fire Insurance Patrol report for the month of January gives statistics as follows: Total number of alarms, 39; second alarms, 2; stills, 44. The causes are as follows: Chimney fires, 17; false, 10; unknown, 5; supposed incendiarism, 3; cigar stub or pipe left on or near bed, 2; spontaneous combustion, 2; hot ashes deposited on floor, 2; ignition of lace curtain from gas jet, 2; and I each, ignition of clothing from gas jet, grease falling on embers, ignition of toys on New Years tree, ignition of paper from steam-pipe, overheated boiler, bursting of glass water-gauge, lighting fire with kerosene oil, ignition of ceiling from smoke-stack, smoky stove, explosion of gasoline stove, upsetting kerosene lamp, salamander, tar kettle, carelessness while smoking defective flue, ignition of shavings around boiler, dog upsetting lamp, carelessness in trimming lamp, spark from chimney, ignition of clothing from candle, communicated, smoke in basement, spark from sheddy pricker, spark falling in charcoal box, fire kindled on an unprotected hearth, overheated steam pipe, explosion of kerosene lamp, hot ashes deposited in wooden barrel, boiling over of kettle of rosin, ignition of kindling wood from chimney, lighted pipe left in pocket of clothing, ignition of dust in dry kiln, friction and ignition of show window from gas jet. Of the buildings 24 were brick, 2 stone, and 18 frame, and were occupied as follows: Dwellings, 20; restaurant, 3 ; barns, 2; offices, 2; and 1 each, vinegar, furniture, mattrass, chair and baking-powder manufactory, tenement, smoke house, gaming house, saloon, hot house, laundry, rolling-mill, foundry, rail-road car, lodging house, carpenter shop, boot and shoe store, dry house, drug store, carriage repository, lamp-post, grocery store, planing mill, tannery, millinery store, and bakery and confectionery. Total insurance involved, $230,725. Total loss, $41,356.50. Total loss to insurance as near as can be ascertained up to date, $30,369,50.
