Mill at Fort Johnson Destroyed

The Morris and Son No. 6 mill, located at Fort Johnson, three miles from Amsterdam, N. Y., was totally destroyed by fire of mysterious origin which started at 9 o’clock, December 3, and burned until after midnight. Sweaters were being made at the mill. When discovered on the second of the three floors the fire had a good start. The boiler fires were banked and it was some time before steam could be raised to run the mill fire pumps. In the meantime a motor combination wagon and an old steamer were sent from Amsterdam and pumped water through 1,000 feet of hose. The combined mill and city forces were powerless to more than save adjoining buildings. The historic Sir William Johnson mansion, or fort, standing near bv and dating from pre-Revolutionary days, was saved but the home of the caretaker was destroyed. The loss is estimated at $300,000. The illustration shows the still smoking ruins at an early hour next morning.
