Miami Office Building Burns

The Mine Exchange Building in Miami, Okla., was destroyed by fire, December 20th and a loss of nearly $125,000 sustained. The building was two-story and basement, brick and stone structure covering 50 x 120 feet of space. It had wall partitions but no sprinkler equipment. Fire started at 2 a. m. and burned six hours. Chief A. H. Shay and four firemen had two hydrant streams in service, laying 750 feet of hose. No engines or other apparatus was available. The opinion of the fire chief that a gas stove left burning melted down and burned its way to the basement, from whence the fire seemed to be spreading, accounts for the thoroughness and progress of the fire which burned for six hours. The firemen did excellent work for six hours in weather 10 degrees below zero, with snow and ice all about them. The loss of the property, almost total over $100,000, was inevitable under the fire fighting equipment and other attendant circumstances.
