Martin Apparatus at Columbus

The new combination chemical and hose apparatus recently delivered by the Martin Carriage Works, York, Pa., to the Franklin Fire Company, No. 1, Columbus, N. J., was carefully demonstrated on the evening of Wednesday, June 24, in the presence of over 5,000 spectators As this apparatus, an illustration of which appears on this page, covers a radius of 10 miles from Columbus, the residents of Mansfield township were on hand to witness the demonstration in the evening. Directly after the demonstration the apparatus was formally accepted and housed. This apparatus is the Martin “S-2” type, and designed for fire department service. It is propelled by a 40 H. P. Wisconsin motor; transmission three speeds forward and one reverse; all gears and shafts chrome nickel steel, mounted on Timken bearings; Timken axles front and rear; wheels fitted with Timken bearings. It has a wheel base of 124 inches and tread of 58 inches. The brake equipment on this apparatus has a full braking area of 430 square inches. The capacity of hose body is 800 feet 2 1/2-inches fire hose, and a basket to carry 200 feet of Jtt-inch chemical hose; two 35-gallon soda and acid tanks of the Martin quick dumping type. The equipment includes two 2 1/2-gallon hand fire extinguishers, four acid receptacles, two hand lanterns, one 20-foot extension ladder, one 12foot roof ladder with patent folding hooks, one firemen’s axe, one crowbar and one 10-foot pike pole. Two 10-inch searchlights are mounted on the front part of chassis frame and the regulation lamps on dashboard and rear of apparatus. The apparatus is finished in fire red, striped and lettered in gold leaf and all parts fully nickelplated.
