Louisville Water Works Improvements
The annual report of President Sebastian Zorn of the Louisville, Kv., water board, shows a large amount of work done in the past year, notwithstanding the high cost of labor and material. The report states:
During the past year this company contracted for considerable work, notwithstanding the high prices that have prevailed. This had to be done in order to get the property in first-class condition and to protect it against emergencies. During this period we have practically completed the Ohio river pumping station No. 3. We have ordered a 30,000,000-gallon pump which is expected to be in service by not later than July 1. We have contracted for four 400 horsepower boilers, with all modern appliances. Two of these boilers have been installed and are ready for operation; two will be installed and ready for operation in the next ninety days. We are now remodeling practically the entire river pumping station, including boiler house, erecting new railroad tracks, automatic coalhandling plant, and expect to make it an up-to-date station. When this is completed we expect to reduce the operating expense at this station about $65 per day; this is in addition to a reduction of $39 per day made since April 1, 1918. At the Crescent Hill station we have contracted for a 40,000,000-gallon pump which should be ready for duty by January 1, 1920. We have also installed at the Crescent Hill station an additional Gordon pump, whereby we can give a better supply of water to Anchorage and all territory east of our Crescent Hill plant. We are also repairing and renewing the old filter beds and have made much added improvements to all of the property and roads, so that the entire property is now in good condition. Realizing the value of the Water Company’s property at Reservoir Park (Crescent Hill) as a public park and playground, it is our purpose to further improve it by building in the spring a swimming pool 300 feet long and 150 feet wide, and to restore the lake at Reservoir Park. When the pool and lake are completed the park will be one of the most beautiful and attractive spots in the country. Additional planting of trees, shrubs and flowers at the river and Crescent Hill stations is also part of our general landscape improvement for the spring.
