Linseed Plant at Chicago Burns
Chicago added a large item to the fire list on the 31st of December when the American Linseed Company’s plant was destroyed, causing a loss of six lives and $2,000,000 worth of property. The fire started with an explosion attributed to spontaneous combustion of linseed dust which wrecked the percolator building and fired the other four buildings occupied by the company. The flames spread so quickly that an oil freighter loaded and beside the plant, caught fire and its cargo was burned. While the linseed plant was burning fire broke out in a warehouse in the Union Stock Yards, from which district apparatus had been sent to the South Chicago fire. The blaze was extinguished after damage amounting to $150,000 had been done.
