Lights Cause Collisions
The high-intensity strobe lights used on fire and rescue vehicles to alert the public to danger, can cause motorists to collide with the vehicles, Dr. Stephen Solomon warned, in a talk at the Town of Colonie Fire Conference on May 18.
Solomon, an optometrist and volunteer fireman from Owego, N.Y., based his conclusions on neurological studies which indicated that under certain circumstances, high intensity lights can alter brain waves, inducing a temporary hypnotic effect on drivers who, unable to look away from the lights, will drive into emergency apparatus.
