La Grand Hotel at Waycross Gutted by Fire

The La Grand Hotel, in the central business district of Waycross, Ga., was gutted by fire which was discovered by the manager at 2.35 a. m. on October 10. One life was Tost in the fire. It is believed the fire started on the second floor but the cause is unknown. It bad gained such rapid headway that the second and third floors were one mass of fire when the department, commanded by Chief Engineer E. C. Hall, arrived. It burned six hours and was stopped when the roof fell in. The building occupied a triangle lot about one acre in area and was erected about eight years ago. It was constructed of brick and wood and had partition walls. The structure was 85 feet high and was equipped with two-inch hose in hallways and with two fire escapes and two elevators. The department had ten firemen at the fire and had two Amcricatt-La F'rance motor pumping engines, type 12, one throwing 800 gallons per minute and the other throwing 915 gallons per minute. Three thousand feet of hose were laid and three six-inch double hydrants were available. Five engine and two hydrant streams were thrown, the water pressure being sufficient for good plug streams and supplying the engines. At daylight the department received some outside help. The contents of the building, consisting of groceries, law books, printing press, billiard room, barber shop and hotel furnishings, valued at $80,000, were a total loss and the damage to the building, valued at $250,000, was estimated at $170,000.
