Jobless Learn to Pass Exams

In what may be a unique experiment, the Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) has begun training unemployed men to enter the fire service. No ordinary college students, these men are among the “disadvantaged” who might never be able to make it in society on their own.

As part of a statewide vocational training program administered through local districts, MATC has been a leader in Fire Technology College-level training (see Fire Engineering, September 1969). The marginal worker, however, lacking even a high school diploma, was locked out of that curriculum. He also didn’t stand a chance of getting on-the-job fire service career training by passing a fire department entrance exam.
