Indianapolis Increases Number of Firemen
The fire department of Indianapolis, following several appointments by the board of public safety, now has 517 members, an increase of about 140 since the first of the year. This increase has been made necessary, according to First Assistant Chief S. C. Hoyl, on account of the adoption of the two-platoon system. The board promoted eleven privates in the department to the rank of chauffeur, and one chauffeur to lieutenant, and added nine substitute firemen to the force, who will be assigned to companies later. When the department has been placed entirely under the two-platoon system, and two new fire houses to be erected on the north side and the west side are completed, the department will have about 600 men. Now about twenty-five substitutes are waiting for assignment, and are not counted in the 517 in the department.
The new siren fire alarm recently purchased by the village of Phelps, N. Y., was installed in the fire house in that town.
