Firefighters Respond to Columbus (IN) Apartment Complex Fire

Columbus (IN)firefightersbattled an apartment fire yesterday evening at the Fox Pointe Commons apartment complex. At approximately 7: 30 p.m., firefighters were called to the 4700 block of Creekside Way after a report of a fire within an apartment. As firefighters responded to the scene, they were informed by dispatchers with the Bartholomew County Emergency Operations Center that the exterior of the building was becoming heavily involved by fire. Crews radioed in that smoke was visible several miles away.

The first-arriving engine company reported heavy fire conditions. Officers with the Columbus Police Department, who were on the scene prior to the arrival of firefighters, reported that all occupants were out of the eight-unit apartment building.

Firefighters initial attack from the exterior of the building. Smoke and fire conditions intensified as the fire burned through the attic space. Firefighters searched six of eight apartments, and the roof collapsed on two apartments. Command ordered exterior attack at 8:10 p.m., and an additional structural collapse occurred as fire suppression operations continued.

A total of 14 tenants reside in the building, and no tenant injuries were reported. The Salvation Army is on the scene providing victim assistance and firefighter rehab. Four apartments sustained significant fire damage. Two apartments sustained significant smoke and water damage.

The fire was place under control at approximately 9 p.m. No injuries were ported at the scene, and the fire investigation is ongoing.
