How to Have the Fire Department Composed of Good Men.*
The importance of having only first class men, as firemen, none will deny, when we consider that year after year the responsibility for efficient work is increased, and although we may be furnished with the best of apparatus and tools, yet without intelligent firemen, we can do but little to prevent a small fire from becoming a conflagration.
With the best trained and disciplined fireman, under skilled and intelligent commanders, it is not to be wondered, that a serious fire occurs once in a while, and it is only by constant vigilance and excellent work by the firemen of the State, that the annual loss by fire is kept less than the annual increase in combustible property.
