Hotel Fire at Oakland
The first duty that confronted the department at a recent fire in Oakland, Cal., was to put the extension ladders in use and rescue guests at the Hotel Metropole. Twelve persons were thus rescued with only one injured—a woman whose back was burned. The hotel, a wooden structure 75x125 ft., built 25 years ago, caught fire in the basement from an overflow of oil. about 10.40 a. m. and a street box alarm was given. When the department, of which E. Whitehead is chief, arrived, the fire had gained considerable headway, and the 100 men engaged had a difficult job on their hands. Fortunately there were available all the hydrants needed and 16 hydrant streams were thrown at one time from nozzles 11/4 to 2 inches. They were supplied by sixand twelve-inch mains with gravity pressure. Seven steamers and 3 gasoline pumping engines were employed and the fire was brought under control in six hours from its inception, without having spread to other buildings. Ten thousand feet of cotton rubber-lined hose were laid, of which none burst. The hotel, valued at $30,000 was damaged to the extent of $25,000, and the loss on the $25,000 contents was estimated at $20,000.
