Hotel Damaged at Hoboken

The American Hotel, at Hoboken, N. J., valued at $75,000, was damaged $17,500 by fire at 10.20 a. m, one day recently. The building was five stories, 75 by 75 feet, and constructed of brick and wood. The fire started from an unknown cause in the center of the building, and spread up a light shaft to the two upper floors. There were several chemical extinguishers in the building. Four engines, a chemical engine, 4 combination wagons and 2 trucks, in command of Chief M. A. Dunn, were in service, and had 8 engine streams in the fire, through 3,300 feet of hose. A gravity water supply provided an abundance of water through 6 double hydrants, 150 feet apart, with 30 pounds of pressure. A Hart ladder pipe was also used. The fire started in a bed room, spread to the light shafts and was coming through the roof when the department arrived, and the hotel people were endeavoring to extinguish the fire with chemical extinguishers.
