Gasoline Tanker Ruptures
When a semi-trailer tank truck with 8000 gallons of gasoline overturned and ruptured at the edge of a large shopping center, the Westbury, N.Y., Fire Department used foam and flushed an extensive area with water to eliminate the hazardous condition.
The alarm for the accident on Perimeter Road at the Roosevelt Field Shopping Center was received at 6:45 a.m. on March 1, and two engines were dispatched under the command of Chief James Kennedy. Upon reaching the scene, Kennedy found that gasoline was running into a drain, so he immediately notified the Nassau County Department of Public Works and learned that this drain led to an underground network serving not only the shopping center, but also several factories.
