GASKILL垂直注入引擎。

GASKILL垂直注入引擎。

WE present herewith two illustrations of Gaskill's vertical engines, which are now used extensively in water-works systems, especially in connection with the Holly system of direct pumping.

The essential features of the Gaskill horizontal engine are embodied in the vertical engine, as shown in the illustration. The steam pistons travel simultaneously in opposite directions, and the valve action has the same effect in the steam distribution as the valve action of the horizontal. This engine was designed by Mr. Gaskill for the same service as the over-head beam engine, an illustration of which is also shown herewith. The steam cylinders being vertical, the pumps can be placed at any desired distance below the engine-room floor, in order to accommodate the engines to situations where the water of the source of supply has a fluctuating level.
