Two garages, the Western and the RithieLindsey, on State street in Santa Barbara, Cal., sustained considerable damage by fire which was caused by a back fire in an automobile after being wasted with distillate, standing over a pump. A night man discovered the fire, which started at about 12.42 a. m., and the fire department, which is commanded by Chief John R. Dugan, was telephoned to at 12.50 a. m. Chief Dugan found the fire already all through the Western garage building and the Rithie-Lindsev garage caught fire through a paper roof. Chief Dugan had ten firemen in service and a type 12 AmericanLa France motor triple combination pumping engine and a Pope combination machine and 2,100 feet of cotton rubber-lined hose. The water pressure at the hydrants was 175 pounds and three streams were throwm with ⅞-inch nozzles. The water system is gravity. The garages were one story in height and built of cement blocks and brick. The Western garage covered an area 66 by 200 feet and the Rithie-Lindsey an area 49 by 150 feet. The contents consisted of automobiles and accessories and by efficient work Chief Dugan and the department kept the losses down to $8,000 on the Western garage building, valued at $10,000 and $72,000 on its contents, valued at $100,000 and only $1,500 on the Rithie-Lindsey building, valued at $8,000 and $1,400 on the contents, valued at $72,000.
