FREQUENT BIOLOGICAL EXAMINATION OF THE WATER SUPPLY A NECESSITY.
(Specially written for FIRE AND WATER.)
A FEW years ago before the science of bacteriology had attained to its present high stage of perfection, it was thought that, according to the number of microorganisms in water, the water was to be condemned or approved. Nowadays, however, it is by the kind of germs present in the water that the latter is judged, and chemistry and bacteriology together decide—(1) whether the water has been exposed to certain conditions which are of considerable importance in judging whether or not it is fit for domestic uses, and especially for drinking purposes, and (2) whether the water contains, or may sooner or later contain poisonous substances whose contagion causes disease Briefly summed up: Chemical and bacterial examination show (1) whether there is sewage pollution in the water; (2) if there are many bacteria, and, if so, what is their probable origin.
