Four Lives Lost in Brooklyn Blaze
The New York fire which is illustrated herewith shows an excellent fire stop on the part of the New York City fire department, the flimsy tenements on each side of the building involved being saved from destruction. The fire, which was in a two-story frame building occupied as a dwelling at 151 21st Street. Brooklyn Borough, resulted in the death of a father and his three children and the probable death of his wife and mother of the family. The latter was rescued by a policeman after her night clothing had been entirely burned from her body. The blaze started in the rear of the first floor and ran up to the sleeping quarters so quickly that the family could not escape. By this time, Engine Company No. 230 and Hook & Ladder Truck Company No. 109 had arrived and ladders were erected against the adjoining tenements. The tenants in the houses at 149, 153 and 155, which were variously three and four stories and all frame, were hustled out as quickly as possible by the firemen and all were able to escape in their night clothing. The fire spread to these buildings, but was controlled before they were destroyed. As soon as Deputy Chief John O’Hara arrived a second alarm was turned in and the department began an hour’s battle to save the entire block of frame buildings from destruction.
火玛莎l Thomas P. Brophy, following rumors that a still had been operated in the house, made an investigation and declared that the origin of the fire was in a passage in the basement and was entirely accidental, there b-eing no evidence of a still in the place..
