Flow Meters Hailed for Easing Pressure on Pump Operators

Recently, a new item for use on fire department pumpers has become available—a gage that measures the volume flowing in the hose lines in gallons per minute. This gage has the potential of revolutionizing fire service hydraulics.

Flow meters, both totalizing and rate (gpm), have been available for some time. However, because of their size and cost as well as design, they were unfit for fire service use. They were too bulky and it would have been difficult to install them behind a pump panel. They were also expensive, especially when one would be needed for each hose line in service. They were not engineered to register in flows encountered in fire service practices, or they read in total gallons, such as a household water meter.
