Firemen Ask Pension from General Tax Fund
The most important business transacted at the annual convention of the National Firemen's Association, held in Springfield, Ill., for three days beginning September 24, was a movement looking to the formation of national fraternal beneficiary organization for the benefit of firemen. The convention was held in the hall of the House of Representatives at the State House and was presided over by President Thomas Johnstone, of Chicago. Being a purely legislative body no large attendance was expected, as the delegates from all parts of the United States, representing about six hundred thousand firemen. Prayer was offered by the Rev. Euclid R. Rogers, former pastor of the Central Baptist Church of that city, after which the visitors and their ladies were warmly welcomed by Mayor John S. Schnepp, in which the city’s chief executive assured them they would be accorded every courtesy during their stay. During the course of his welcoming address Mayor Schnepp took occasion to pay a high tribute to the efficiency of the Springfield fire department, and particularly to its chief, Henry Bolte, through whose efforts it has been brought to the present high standard. Responses to the address of Mayor Schnepp were made by President Johnstone, vice-president Hugo Delf, chief of the department at Lansing, Mich., and Captain Hill of the Los Angeles, Cal., fire department.
