Fire Swept Sanatorium Closed

The Pennsylvania State Welfare Department removed the license of the Belle Vista Sanatorium, where ten mental patients died in a fire on March 28. At the same time it criticized the management of the private sanatorium for an obvious lack of responsibility" in meeting mental health laws.

The institution, just outside Philadelphia, was ordered to close as of August 1. The department said that at the time the tire was reported it had the sanatorium listed as caring for nine patients. A subsequent investigation, the department said, showed ninety patients were under treatment when the fire struck.
