Fire Service Power and Hand Tools

“Open up!” is usually the first order given at a fire and often it is accomplished simply by turning a doorknob or raising a window. More often it requires some sort of hand tool that can pry, cut or batter. Less often, but still frequently, opening up requires a power tool supplied hydraulically, pneumatically, electrically or by an internal combustion engine.

Before the advent of power, fire fighters relied on the traditional ax, claw tool (or some variant such as the kelly tool), hook, hand saws, battery ram, punch and chisel and maul.
