Fire Prevention on the Leviathan

Fire Prevention on the Leviathan

The American Steamer Leviathan, which was formerly the German liner Vaterland, is now laid up at Newport News, Va., undergoing what is practically a reconstruction after her long service in the World War as a transport for American troops. Among other alterations, she is being thoroughly equipped with the most modern fire prevention devices, among them being the installation of a complete foam system, which is simply an advance application of the principle of smothering fire by the exclusion of oxygen through an air-tight blanket of foam bubbles inflated by carbon monoxide gas. This system has also been installed in about twenty-five of the Standard Oil Company’s tankers as well as in the liners Majestic, Olympic, Aquitania and others.
