Women “firemen” saved the carpet weaving factory of Luther Buchan & Co., at Port Jervis, N. Y., from being destroyed by fire. Mrs. Johnson Morse and Mrs. Abraham Auryansen, on discovering the flames, attached a garden hose to a hydrant and laid it. Several other women came up and through their efforts kept the blaze from spreading till the fire department arrived and extinguished the fire.

The board of fire commissioners of this city has established a “cabinet” meeting system for Wednesdays and Fridays of each week for the purpose mainly of conferring with the heads of the several bureaus in fire headquarters, to consider ways and means to be adopted look, ing to better the discipline and efficiency of the working force, the prevention of incendiarism, and the prompt are rest of all offenders in this line. The board also will give public hearings to nil persons who may have new Inventions to present or views to be expressed in furtherance of advancing and improving in every way the present fire system, for the saving of life and property in this city. The commissioners invite such persons to appear before them for these objects.
