Suction is taken under about 10 feet head directly from the head-race; discharge from both pumps is to two connected and gated force mains, an 8-inch and a 12-inch, which extend about 1,200 feet to two distributing reservoirs. Station at about elevation 8, with mean low water in the Potomac river as datum. Coal is supplied under contract and hauled by teams; station operated continuously in tw'O shifts of one man each. Station is a small area stone and brick one-story building, divided into pump and boiler rooms, with unprotected opening between; upper six feet and root of pump room of wood; roof covered with tin; floors brick; plastered ceiling in pumping room. Brick stack adjoining boiler room. Exposed by two-story, frame mill, 30 feet distant. Chemical extinguisher in pump room; double hydrant with 400 feet of 2½-⅛⅛ hose in hose house 60 feet distant; 35 pounds pressure on main; closest fire station about one mile. The distributing reservoirs arc located on a hill one mile west of the center of the city; built in two basins, one of 2,500,000 gallons’ capacity and one of 14,000,000 gallons’ capacity, connected by two pipes about six feet below top. Elevation of top about 96.5; water level about 95; bottom at elevation 81. Inlet pipes are well arranged; outlet pipes extend from each reservoir and connect into two supply lines, a 10-inch and a 20-inch, poorly arranged at the reservoir, as a single break could put both out of service. Reservoirs have earth embankments paved on inside; condition good.
