AT the recent congress of firemen at Antwerp, Captain Horace Folker, secretary of the British Union, said that during the last few years firemen’s organizations have been established in many countries, the principal corporations being as follows: America, the National Association of Fire Engineers; New York Central Volunteer Firemen’s Association; Australia, the County Fire Brigades’ Board; Belgium, Federation des Sapeurs Pompiers de Belgique; England the National Fire Brigades’ Union; France, Federation des Sapeurs Pompiers; New Zealand, United Fire Brigades’ Association. It is now proposed, he said, to establish a central board of an international fire brigades union, with'the understanding that each nation shall appoint correspondents to report all matters of interest-for consideration at various periods, and that a report of the working of the fire service shall be issued to every federation for the benefit of its members. The sentiment expressed here is praiseworthy, but it is doubtful whether such an organization can accomplish the objects it undertakes. Secretary Folker hasn’t named a third of the fire associations in this country alone, and there are many foreign organizations which he has omitted to name, but enough is known of the difference in the methods of fighting fires in these countries to warrant the belief that any very great change can or will be effected by the suggested organization. As for reporting matters of interest relating to the fire service of every nation, no little thanks is due, up to the present time, to the earnest and conscientious papers published in its behalf in six different languages in as many countries.
