Hundreds of firefighters paid tribute Thursday tofallen Hamilton (OH) Firefighter Patrick Wolterman, who died in a fire earlier this week.
Men and women from the Cincinnati, Hanover Township, Fairfield Township, Liberty Township, Monroe, and Ross Township fire departments will fill in for the Hamilton firefighters wishing to pay respects to Wolterman, accordingto a report on Cincinnati.com.
As Patrick Wolterman’s flag-draped casket traveled through the streets of Hamilton on Thursday, the hundreds of people lining the streets in the fallen firefighter’s honor had little left to say, according to Cincinnati.com.
Since Monday, when the 28-year-old died battling a house fire, they’d already said so much, sharing stories of Wolterman the newlywed, the selfless colleague, and, ultimately, the hero.
So, during a somber day of public services and a private burial, they instead expressed themselves in silent symbols: A baseball hat clutched over a man’s heart as an Engine 25 Hamilton Fire Department truck passed by on Hamilton Avenue. A coffee shop sidewalk sign reading “Honoring Patrick.” A freshly unfolded American flag hanging in a wine shop’s window.
Some knew the man who just earlier this year joined the Hamilton department after departing Colerain Township’s. Many others had never met him, but insisted on braving the near-freezing temperatures anyway.
“It’s to teach them respect,” said Amber Rolf, of White Oak, who huddled with her children on a small patch of grass along Spring Grove Avenue. Their three-hour commitment wasn’t optional, she said, because the children’s father is a firefighter, too.
