Factor of the Alarm Box in Fire-Fighting
Time is an important factor in fighting fire. The minutes that elapse between the discovery of the fire, the sounding of the alarm and the arrival of the fire department may mean quick extinguishment with little damage or, on the other hand, the loss of the building, depending entirely upon the promptness with which the alarm has been sent in, the speedy work of the alarm apparatus and of course the promptness and quick response of the fire department.
In the first instance education plays a most important part. If the person who discovers the fire has been taught to realize the importance of quick notification of the fire department through the means of a fire box and has been instructed in the location of the box, so as to have no difficulty in finding it, the alarm will be promptly transmitted to the fire department. If, on the other hand, the individual does not know anything about the use of the box or is ignorant of the location of the one nearest to the fire, or both, then delays, which will mean all the difference in the world in fighting the fire, will occur.
