Entire Department Fights Lafayette, LaStore Fire

A strong attack responsible for controlling a fire at the McCrory variety store that threatened the business district of Lafayette, La., and caused an estimated $750,000 damage to buildings and their contents. The fire was termed the costliest fire in the history of this south Louisiana city. Mutual aid companies from seven towns covered local firehouses.

Firemen were able to confine the blaze to the 27,500-square-foot, two-and-three-story, brick-and-frame building. The buildings on either side, separated by a fire wall, sustained only minor smoke and water damage, although the fire building was a mass of snarled brick, steel and timber when the flames were finally extinguished.
