A strong object lesson in favor of motor apparatus aside from its other advantages over horse drawn apparatus, such as cost, maintenance, etc., has been given in New York City, where Fire Commissioner Adamson has turned over to the city a number of premises, valued at about $400,000, which the Fire Department no longer needs the use of because of motorization. In some instance the buildings no longer required were used as fuel houses and in others are fire stations which have been abandoned in the process of readjustment due to the motorization of companies. The value of the property thus made available for other purposes exceeds by a goodly margin the amount asked by the department and authorized by the Board of Estimate for motor apparatus this year. Simultaneous with this the Providence, R. I., finance committee of the City Council has recommended the entire motorization of the Fire Department, one reason being that they figure the force of men would then only have to be increased by twenty instead of by forty men which are needed if it is not motorized. In other words the city can do with twenty less firemen if the department is motorized than otherwise.
